Why Creation C.A.R.E matters (What a Dandelion Taught Us)

There are preschools with big gardens, shady trees, and a park just across the road. And then there are preschools where nature feels far away. One of our principals told me about her centre with no easy access to a nearby park, no garden within the compound, no green patch the children could wander into. The only hint of nature was a narrow strip of grass along the fence.
That was all they had.
Until one day, during outdoor exploration, the children noticed something small and unexpected.
A dandelion.

That tiny discovery became the beginning of their Creation C.A.R.E. journey.
The children began to observe the dandelion closely. They learnt how dandelions disperse their seeds through the wind, how the plant doesn’t control where the seeds will go. Each seed simply follows the wind, lands wherever it is carried, and then does its best to take root and grow.
They also noticed something else: each fluffy seed carries a tiny core that holds life. It looks fragile, almost weightless. But inside is quiet strength and a potential to take root, grow, and blossom.

For reasons only children can explain (and adults can learn from), they decided they wanted to help.
They collected some of the seeds and planted them in a pot of good soil. They watered them, spoke to them, watched over them, and checked on them every day when they came to school.
For a long time, nothing happened.
Then one day, small green shoots appeared. The children were elated.
One child suggested placing the pot outside so the shoots could receive sunlight. It was thoughtful and it made sense.
But over the weekend, there was a heavy thunderstorm.
When the children returned on Monday, the pot had been flooded. The young shoots had drowned.
The children were devastated.
All their care, effort, and hope seemed to have come to nothing.

In that moment, the principal gently pointed them back to the narrow strip of grass along the fence.
The dandelions there were still growing.
And she said to the children:
“Look, the dandelions there are still growing. This is how God cares even for them. How much more will He care for each one of us?”
In that small strip of grass, the children learnt a deep truth:
Creation care is not only about what we do for nature. It is also about learning to see how God cares for His creation.
Even in a place with no park, no garden, and only a narrow strip of grass, life was still growing.
And through one humble dandelion, the children discovered wonder, care, loss, resilience, and the faithful provision of God.
So what is Creation C.A.R.E.?
Creation C.A.R.E. stands for Children’s Action to Rescue Earth.
But for us, it’s not just a slogan. It’s a way of forming children by helping them grow into people who notice, who care, and who act.
Over a 10-week journey, children explore sustainability and gardening through hands-on activities and learning journeys (including visits to nearby community gardens where possible). They learn that caring for the earth doesn’t begin with big speeches. It begins with small, repeated choices.
They also learn that “waste” is often just a lack of imagination.
Recycled and repurposed materials are transformed into terrariums and sculptures — styrofoam nets become flowers, wooden crates become dioramas, and everyday reusable items find a second life.
This is because we’re shaping a habit: to value what God has made, and to use what we have been given wisely.
Creation C.A.R.E. matters because it teaches children things we can’t always teach through worksheets.
Wonder: noticing the world closely, even if it’s “just” a strip of grass.
Responsibility: understanding that our choices affect others and the environment.
Patience: growth takes time, and not everything happens on our timeline.
Resilience: sometimes our best efforts don’t turn out the way we hoped.
Faith: learning to see God’s care in creation and trusting that His care extends to us.
The dandelion story is a reminder that children don’t need perfect conditions to learn deeply.
They need adults who will slow down with them.
Adults who will help them name what they see, hold what they feel, and connect everyday moments to bigger truths.

One small action at a time
Creation C.A.R.E. is not about raising children who feel anxious about the planet.
It’s about raising children who feel responsible.
Children who believe that small actions matter.
Children who learn, early on, that caring is part of worship, and stewardship is part of love.
Sometimes, it starts with a community garden.
Sometimes, it starts with a recycled material in a classroom.
And sometimes, it starts with a single dandelion growing faithfully along a fence.
Because even there, God is at work.
When children and seniors create together
One of the moments that stayed with us happened on showcase day, when 45 seniors from Presbyterian Community Services (PCS)'s Cedar Tree Toh Yi AAC joined us.
They came to celebrate the children’s growth and they didn’t just watch from the side. They jumped in to support the programme by partnering the children in a hands-on flower printing session.
We saw seniors patiently pulling at tapes while children concentrated hard on cutting them. We heard laughter as they figured things out together, side by side. Some seniors shared that seeing the children felt like seeing their own grandchildren.
That’s part of why Creation C.A.R.E. matters.
Care is not only about the earth. It’s also about people, across ages, across life stages, learning to slow down, notice, and do something meaningful together.
It also felt especially significant for us as an organisation. Presbyterian Preschool Services (PPS) was part of PCS back in 1979, and we were incorporated as a separate identity in 2021, in line with the government’s new ruling for preschool services to be more focused.
Even as structures change, the heart remains: to serve families and community with care.
While we are no longer seen as one identity, we share the same roots in history and we hope to continue supporting one another in ministry.
