What does it mean when a preschool receives SPARK certification? SPARK certification is a quality recognition framework for preschools in Singapore. It gives preschools a structured way to examine their practices, identify areas for improvement and strengthen the quality of education and care they provide to children.

For Little Olive Tree, SPARK is more than a certification milestone. It is part of an ongoing journey of professional learning, reflection and improvement. On 26 September 2026, seven of our Little Olive Tree Preschools received SPARK certification at ECDA’s ceremony. Two more have met the quality standards and will receive their recognition next year.

It was a moment of joy for our whole Little Olive Tree community. It also prompted me to reflect: what, exactly, were we celebrating?

SPARK stands for the Singapore Preschool Accreditation Framework. It provides standards against which preschools can examine and improve their work. But understanding those standards is only the beginning of understanding its value.

It is possible to approach an assessment as an examination: prepare for it, meet the requirements, receive the certificate and display it on the wall. It is also possible to read a framework as a single template that every preschool should fit into.

When we approach SPARK in these ways, we miss much of what it can offer.

For Little Olive Tree, SPARK is a journey undertaken by educators who share a desire to grow professionally and provide better education and care for their children. The assessment gives us a way to examine our practice honestly, learn together and consider what we can do better.

That requires openness. We must be willing to ask why we do things a certain way, listen to another perspective and recognise when a familiar practice needs to change. We must also recognise what is working well and understand why, so that others can learn from it.

The standards provide a structure for this work. Our educators give it life.

At the heart of it is a desire to do our work well because children deserve our best. That purpose remains with us on ordinary school days, long after the assessment is over. It is present in the care with which a teacher responds to a child, the thought behind a learning experience and the willingness of colleagues to help one another improve.

This is why a school’s certification is celebrated across the whole Little Olive Tree community. We recognise the effort, learning and encouragement that have brought our colleagues to this milestone. Everyone has a stake in the journey. Our pride comes from having grown and achieved something together.

A moment at the ceremony reminded me that there are people

Behind every framework are people.

At the ECDA ceremony, I heard Mr Masagos draw the International Advisory Committee's attention to Dr Sum Chee Wah, who was seated nearby, acknowledging her role in bringing SPARK to the early childhood sector.

That small gesture stayed with me.

We often speak of systems and standards as though they exist on their own. Yet behind them are people who saw a need, believed that something better was possible and worked with others to bring it into being.

SPARK has been implemented since 2011. Behind those years of assessments and certifications lies a human endeavour: people working towards better education and care, so that every child can have a good start in life.

For me, Mr Masagos’s gesture brought the person behind the system into view. It reminded me to appreciate the conviction it takes to begin such work, the collective effort needed to develop it and the commitment required to carry it forward.

That same spirit matters within our preschools. Each generation of leaders and educators brings its experience, questions and hopes to the work. We learn from those who came before us, contribute what we can and help others continue the journey.

“众人拾柴火焰高。” When everyone adds firewood, the flames rise higher.

Yet when the fire burns brightly and the flames rise high, our eyes are often drawn to the fire. We can forget the many hands that gathered the wood, tended the embers and patiently kept the flame alive.

As we celebrate our schools’ SPARK certification, let us remember those hands. Those who first believed in what was possible. Those who brought others along. Those who continue, day after day, to give their care, thought and energy to the children entrusted to them.

The fire burns brightly because so many have brought something of themselves to it. That human spirit, and that shared endeavour, deserve to be celebrated too.
