From K2 to Primary 1: Learning from Those Who Have Been There

“What is recess like in Primary School?”

“What time does school end?”

“What happens if we are late?”

As our K2 children at Little Olive Tree Rochor prepare for their next chapter, they have plenty of questions about life in Primary 1. It is an exciting milestone, but one that can also feel a little daunting. There will be new routines to learn, new friends to make and a new school environment to navigate.

To help our K2 children get a glimpse of what lies ahead, we welcomed back former Little Olive Tree students for a group discussion about their experiences in Primary School.

And they came prepared with textbooks, school diaries, reward pins and class photographs, each offering a little window into their lives beyond preschool.

A Little Glimpse into Primary School Life

The former students shared about the everyday things that make up a school day: spending recess with friends, visiting the library, playing in the field and knowing what time the school day officially ends.

They showed the K2 children their textbooks and school diaries, along with reward pins and class photos. These familiar objects made the conversation more tangible, helping the younger children picture what their own school days might look like.

For the K2 children, Primary School became more than an idea of a new place they would eventually go to. Through the stories and belongings of their former schoolmates, it became something they could begin to imagine for themselves.

Sometimes, it is these ordinary details that help make an unfamiliar experience feel a little less unfamiliar.

“I Was Scared Too.”

Perhaps the most reassuring part of the conversation was hearing the former students talk about how scared they had felt during their first week of Primary School.

For children preparing for a big transition, it can be easy to wonder whether they will be the only ones feeling nervous. Hearing older children speak honestly about their own fears helps them understand that these feelings are a natural part of starting something new.

The former students had been through those first days themselves. They knew what it was like to enter a new environment, learn unfamiliar routines and adjust to a different stage of school life.

Their stories offered the K2 children something more meaningful than a list of things to expect. They offered reassurance: it is all right to feel nervous, and it is possible to grow more comfortable with time.

Growing up does not mean never feeling afraid. Sometimes, it means discovering that we can take the next step even when we are.

Questions, Conversations and Growing Confidence

The session also gave our K2 children the opportunity to ask about the things they were curious about, from recess and the playground to classroom routines and what happens when they face difficulties.

These may seem like small questions to adults, but they matter to children who

are preparing to leave a familiar environment and enter a new one.

By making space for their questions, we help children express their concerns, explore their curiosity and begin to understand what lies ahead.

And when the answers come from someone who once sat in the same K2 classroom, the experience can feel especially relatable.

The conversation was a reminder that preparing for Primary 1 is not only about getting ready academically. It is also about helping children build confidence, develop independence and feel supported as they navigate change.

Once Part of Our Story, Always Part of Our Community

For our former students, returning to Little Olive Tree Rochor was an opportunity to share a part of their growing-up journey with the children who will soon follow in their footsteps.

For our K2 children, it was a chance to see what comes next through the eyes of those who have experienced it themselves.

A child's time at preschool may come to an end, but the relationships and memories formed along the way can continue to hold meaning. Our former students may now be learning in a different school, but they remain part of the Little Olive Tree story.

To our alumni, thank you for returning, sharing your experiences and helping our K2 children look towards Primary 1 with a little more understanding and reassurance.

And to our K2 children: a new chapter may bring unfamiliar things, and it is all right to feel a little nervous. Keep asking questions, stay curious and remember that you do not have to know everything on the first day.

One step at a time, you will find your way.
