Teachers’ Day Reflection: Adventure Awaits at Little Olive Tree

On this Teachers’ Day, I find myself reflecting on a simple question:
"What does it really mean to keep a school going?"
At first glance, it may appear to be about keeping classrooms open, programmes running, schedules organised, and daily operations moving. These things are important, but they are only the visible part of our work.
What Does It Mean to Keep a School Going?
Keeping a school going means showing up, day after day, even when we are tired.
It means welcoming every child with warmth, regardless of the burdens we may be carrying in our own hearts. It means finding the patience to explain something one more time, the wisdom to see beyond difficult behaviour, and the compassion to recognise the needs a child may not yet know how to express.
Keeping a school going means doing countless things that may never be noticed or celebrated: preparing lessons after a long day, comforting an anxious child, listening to a concerned parent, supporting a struggling colleague, solving unexpected problems, and somehow finding the strength to begin again the next morning.
A school does not keep going simply because its doors remain open. "It keeps going because its people continue to care."
Policies and programmes may provide structure, and buildings may provide space, but it is people who give a school its heart. It is the teacher who believes in a child before that child learns to believe in themselves. It is the staff member who faithfully works behind the scenes. It is the leader who carries difficult responsibilities and makes hard decisions. It is every person who chooses to say, “This matters, and I will do my part.”
The People Behind Early Childhood Education
There have been seasons when keeping our schools going required more from us than we thought we had to give. We have faced uncertainty, limited resources, changing expectations, and challenges we could not have anticipated. There were moments of exhaustion and, perhaps, moments when some of us quietly wondered, “How much longer can I keep doing this?”
Yet here we are.
We are here because, when one person grew tired, another offered strength. When someone stumbled, another reached out a hand. When the way ahead was unclear, we continued walking together.
We may not always have had everything we wanted, but we gave what we had and often, we gave far more than what was required.
That is what has kept Little Olive Tree going.
But perhaps merely “keeping a school going” is not enough. Our calling is not simply to keep an organisation functioning. "It is to keep hope alive."
Every child who walks through our doors is beginning an adventure of their own. They come to us carrying questions, fears, gifts, and possibilities that have not yet unfolded. Through our words, patience, example, and care, we help them discover who they are and who they may become.
The lessons they remember may not always be the ones written in our plans. They may remember that someone listened to them, believed in them, forgave them, or made them feel safe and loved. They may remember the teacher who gave them the courage to take one more step into the unknown.
This is the quiet and sacred work of early childhood education. We may not always see its impact immediately, but what we plant in a child today can remain for years and sometimes for generations.
Adventure Awaits
And perhaps this is what prepares us for the adventure ahead.
The theme of our Teachers’ Day celebration is “Adventure Awaits.” It is a hopeful theme, but it is also an honest one. Every real adventure carries both excitement and uncertainty.
We do not know everything that lies ahead. There will be new challenges to face, difficult decisions to make, great waves to overcome, and unfamiliar paths to walk. There may be days when our strength feels small and the mountain before us seems too high.
But adventure is not the absence of difficulty. "It is the courage to move forward despite it."
Courage does not mean having all the answers. Sometimes, courage simply means taking the next step. And our journey has taught us that we do not have to take that step alone.
On this Teachers’ Day, let us remember that keeping a school going is not one person’s achievement. It is a shared commitment. An adventure of courage, faith, perseverance, and love.
To every member of the Little Olive Tree family: thank you for showing up. Thank you for carrying one another. Thank you for walking this road together and for keeping the heart of our schools beating, especially on the difficult days.
As long as we remember why we began, remain faithful to the children and families entrusted to us, and continue to stand together, Little Olive Tree will do more than keep going.
It will continue to grow, flourish, and bring hope to
one child, one family, one courageous step, and one faithful day at a time.
Adventure awaits us.
Let us hold on together.
