From Seed to Plate: A Hands-On Learning Experience

At Little Olive Tree Ghim Moh, meaningful learning often happens when children are able to connect ideas with real experiences. Recently, our children had the opportunity to take part in a special service-learning workshop conducted by students from the Nanyang Business School Tax Advisory Club from Nanyang Technological University.

The workshop was designed to introduce children to two important ideas — environmental awareness and early food literacy. Through simple conversations and hands-on activities, the session helped children understand an important connection that is often overlooked: the journey from plants in the ground to food on our plates.

The children were introduced to different vegetables and learned simple facts about how they benefit our health. Through engaging discussions and sensory exploration, the children discovered that vegetables are not just something served at the table. They are living plants that grow from the soil.

The highlight of the session was the planting activity. Each child had the opportunity to plant their own pot of microgreens. With guidance from the NTU students, the children filled their pots with soil, carefully sowed the seeds, and learned what plants need in order to grow.

More importantly, each child brought their pot home, giving them the responsibility to care for their plant and observe its growth in the days to come.

Experiences like these help make learning concrete. When children are able to plant, touch, and nurture something themselves, the concept of where food comes from becomes real and memorable.

We are grateful to the students from NTU’s Nanyang Business School Tax Advisory Club for partnering with us to make this learning experience possible. Through initiatives like this, our children not only gain knowledge but also develop curiosity, responsibility, and a deeper appreciation for the natural world.

At Little Olive Tree, we continue to create opportunities where learning goes beyond the classroom. These experiences help children explore, discover, and connect with the world around them.
