“Being Before Doing” — A Sacred Reminder for Christian Educators

On 23 April, our Little Olive Tree (LOT) leaders had the privilege of meeting Rev Dr Caleb Soo, Moderator of the Presbyterian Synod, for a heartfelt time of sharing and encouragement, reminding ourselves why we do what we do.

He reminded us that the Synod stands firmly with us—and that what we do in early childhood is crucial to shaping not only individual lives, but entire generations.

At the core of his message was a powerful truth:

“Christian education stems from us being, not doing.”In God's design, who we are precedes what we do. A person is good first, and therefore produces good fruit—not the other way around.

In a world that glorifies performance, this was a timely and grounding call to return to the heart. Our goal is not to raise high performers, but to nurture children of character, grounded in truth, and growing in Christlikeness.

Rev Soo also reminded us:

  • Our influence as leaders flows only when we are influenced by God.

  • We’re not here to make a big buck. We’re here because of our calling.

  • We may be shaping the next Prime Minister—or a future President. We don’t know. But we give our best to every child, every day.

  • True transformation begins with values—values that guide every decision, every step.

He also openly acknowledged the challenges we face—especially the difficulty in finding educators who are both skilled and mission-aligned. Yet, he honoured those who serve faithfully in this space, often at great personal cost.

“This is Kingdom work,” he said. “Preschools like ours are sacred spaces where seeds of faith are sown.”

Our leaders also shared from the heart:

💬 Bethanie (LOT Ghim Moh) emphasized how values-based teaching is what differentiates us—and it’s what the world truly needs.

💬 Priscilla (LOT Bethany) highlighted the generous spirit in how we create and freely share curriculum resources that build both learning and family bonds.

💬 Liana (LOT Tampines) urged the Church to walk more closely with us in devotion and mentoring. Rev Soo responded warmly, “Definitely!”

💬 Rachel (LOT Woodlands) raised a stirring call for more Christians to step into the ministry of education. The room echoed in agreement with a resounding “Amen!”

Rev Soo also shared how he’s sustained daily devotions for years: with passion, clarity, and a belief in God’s call. He left us with this beautiful encouragement:

God meets us where we are. We, too, must meet people where they are.

Let us press on. Not just to raise bright minds, but to nurture children of God—rooted in truth, beauty and goodness.
