Project Approach in Action: Exploring Little Olive Tree's Holistic Learning Case Studies

At Little Olive Tree Preschool, we believe children learn best when they engage with meaningful experiences that spark curiosity and wonder. Our project approach is a cornerstone of our holistic learning philosophy, where children embark on extended investigations of topics worth learning about, guided by teachers who help them see God's handiwork in all aspects of creation.

Through our unique "Truth, Beauty, and Goodness" curriculum, projects become more than just learning activities—they transform into journeys of discovery where children develop academic skills, biblical perspectives, and Christ-like character simultaneously. In this case study series, we invite you to witness how our project approach comes alive across our 16 preschool centers in Singapore, creating rich learning experiences that honor each child's God-given potential.

Join us as we explore real examples of project-based learning that demonstrate how children at Little Olive Tree are growing not just in knowledge, but in wisdom and character, becoming joyful learners who will one day be blessings to their communities.

Understanding Little Olive Tree's Project Approach

The project approach at Little Olive Tree is distinct from conventional early childhood methodologies. Rather than implementing a standardized curriculum of isolated activities, our educators facilitate in-depth explorations that emerge from children's natural curiosity while being intentionally guided toward biblical truths. Projects typically unfold over several weeks, allowing children to investigate topics thoroughly and develop deeper understandings.

Our project approach is characterized by three key phases:

  1. Beginning the Journey: Teachers observe children's interests and questions, then thoughtfully introduce topics that can lead to meaningful explorations. This phase includes group discussions, creating question boards, and establishing what children already know about the topic.

  2. Investigation and Discovery: Children engage in hands-on research, field visits, expert interviews, creative representations, and collaborative problem-solving. Throughout this phase, teachers highlight connections to biblical principles and God's design.

  3. Sharing and Reflection: Children document their learning journey and share their discoveries with peers, parents, and sometimes the wider community. This phase emphasizes gratitude for what God has revealed through their exploration.

What makes our approach special is how we weave biblical perspectives throughout each project, helping children see connections between what they're learning and God's truth, beauty, and goodness in the world.

The Biblical Foundation of Our Project Approach

At Little Olive Tree, our project approach is deeply rooted in biblical principles that shape how we view learning, children, and knowledge itself. We believe all truth is God's truth, and our projects reflect this foundational understanding.

Just as the olive tree in Scripture symbolizes beauty, abundance, and flourishing growth, our project approach nurtures children to flourish in all dimensions—intellectually, socially, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Projects are designed to help children recognize God's creative design in everything from nature and communities to languages and numbers.

Our educators intentionally highlight biblical connections without forcing artificial spiritual lessons. For example, when exploring nature, children naturally discover order, patterns, and interdependence that reflect God's wisdom in creation. When investigating community helpers, children learn about service, responsibility, and using one's gifts to bless others—all principles that echo biblical teachings.

This integration of faith and learning creates a unified worldview where children don't compartmentalize "Bible knowledge" separately from "academic knowledge." Instead, they develop a cohesive understanding that all discovery ultimately points to God's character and design.

Case Study 1: The Community Helpers Project

In our K1 classroom at our Bethany Presbyterian Church center, children's fascination with different occupations sparked a meaningful three-month exploration into community helpers. What began with questions about firefighters quickly expanded into a comprehensive investigation of how different members of society contribute to our community.

How the project unfolded:

The journey began when a child's parent, who works as a firefighter, visited our classroom. Children's excitement and questions revealed their deep interest in understanding how different people help our community function. Our educators recognized this as an opportunity to explore biblical principles of service, using gifts to help others, and community.

Over the following weeks, children:

  • Created detailed drawings of community helpers they knew

  • Developed a growing list of questions they wanted to answer

  • Participated in a neighborhood walk to observe helpers in action

  • Welcomed parents with different occupations as classroom guests

  • Constructed a miniature community in their dramatic play area

  • Designed thank-you cards for helpers in their school building

Through this project, children developed literacy skills by documenting their learning in journals and dictating stories about community helpers. Math concepts emerged naturally as they sorted and categorized different occupations and counted the helpers they observed. Most importantly, they connected these discoveries to biblical values of serving others with love and using one's unique gifts to contribute to community well-being.

Children's reflections revealed their growing understanding. Five-year-old Emma shared, "God gave different jobs to different people so we can all help each other," while Jayden noted, "I want to be a doctor when I grow up because I can help people feel better when they're sick, just like Jesus helped people."

Case Study 2: Growing Together - Our Garden Project

At our Foochow Methodist Church center, a garden project emerged organically when children noticed sprouting seeds in the outdoor play area after a rainstorm. This observation sparked questions about plant growth that led to a four-month garden project involving our Nursery 2 class.

Project development and learning:

The project began with children's observations and questions: "Why do plants grow?" "What do plants need?" "Can we grow our own plants?" Our educators recognized this curiosity as an opportunity to explore biblical themes of growth, stewardship, and God's provision.

Throughout the project, children:

  • Examined different types of seeds and predicted what might grow from each

  • Created observational drawings of plants at different stages of growth

  • Designed experiments to discover what plants need to thrive

  • Planted their own classroom garden with herbs and vegetables

  • Measured and documented plant growth over time

  • Harvested vegetables and prepared a simple meal to share

The garden project naturally integrated multiple learning domains. Children developed scientific inquiry skills as they observed, questioned, and experimented. Mathematical concepts emerged as they measured plants, counted days until germination, and created growth charts. Language and literacy flourished as they recorded observations and researched information about plants in books.

Most meaningfully, children connected their learning to biblical concepts. They discovered the parable of the sower and related it to their own planting experiences. They discussed God's wisdom in designing seeds and the responsibility humans have to care for creation. When harvest time arrived, children expressed gratitude for God's provision and the miracle of growth from tiny seeds.

Four-year-old Lucas remarked, "Seeds are like God's surprise boxes. They look so small but have a whole plant inside waiting to grow!" while Sophia observed, "Plants need water and sun and good soil. We need God's Word and love to grow too."

Case Study 3: Cultural Celebrations and Traditions

Singapore's rich multicultural heritage provided the inspiration for an extended project on cultural celebrations and traditions at our Ang Mo Kio center. What began as children's questions about Chinese New Year decorations evolved into a three-month exploration of diverse cultural practices, family traditions, and the values these celebrations reflect.

Exploring diversity through God's lens:

This project was particularly powerful as it allowed children from different backgrounds to share their family traditions while discovering God's love for all peoples and cultures. Our educators carefully guided children to see how different cultural expressions reflect aspects of God's creativity and values that transcend cultural boundaries.

The project journey included:

  • Creating a classroom "museum" of cultural artifacts shared by families

  • Exploring traditional foods, clothing, music, and celebrations

  • Learning simple greetings and songs in different languages

  • Interviewing grandparents about celebrations from their childhood

  • Creating artwork inspired by different cultural traditions

  • Hosting a multicultural celebration where families shared traditions

Through this exploration, children developed respect for diversity while recognizing common values across cultures—hospitality, gratitude, family bonds, and community celebration. Our educators helped children see how these values align with biblical principles and reflect God's design for human relationships.

The project naturally incorporated language development as children encountered new vocabulary, practiced different greetings, and documented their learning. Mathematical concepts emerged through pattern recognition in cultural designs, calendar awareness of different celebrations, and sorting artifacts by culture and purpose.

Five-year-old Mei Ling reflected, "God made so many different people and we all celebrate in special ways. But everyone likes to say thank you to God and be with family." Her classmate Arjun added, "My family celebrates Deepavali and Samuel's celebrates Christmas, but both are about light and joy!"

Parent-Child Connection: Extending Projects at Home

At Little Olive Tree, we believe parents are the primary educators of their children, and our project approach extends beyond the classroom through thoughtful parent-child activities at home. These home connections deepen learning, strengthen family bonds, and help parents participate meaningfully in their child's educational journey.

For each project, we provide families with simple, engaging activities that extend classroom investigations into the home environment. These activities are designed to be enjoyable, manageable for busy parents, and meaningful for children's development.

Examples of home-based learning extensions:

During our Community Helpers project, families received suggestions such as: - Pointing out and discussing different helpers encountered in daily routines - Creating thank-you notes for community helpers they regularly interact with - Reading suggested books about community roles and service - Discussing family members' occupations and how they contribute to society

For our Garden project, parent-child activities included: - Growing a simple plant together at home and observing its development - Visiting a local garden or park to identify different plants - Cooking together using fresh vegetables or herbs - Reading biblical passages about growth, seeds, and harvest

These home connections create natural opportunities for faith conversations as parents help children recognize God's design in their everyday discoveries. By sharing bi-annual updates on project themes and concepts, we equip parents to engage meaningfully with their child's learning journey while respecting family time and schedules.

Parent feedback confirms the value of these connections. One parent shared, "The suggested activities have given us wonderful conversation starters with our daughter. We now notice things together that we might have walked right past before, and it's opened up so many opportunities to talk about God's creation and design."

Observing Growth Through Projects

At Little Olive Tree, we thoughtfully document children's development throughout project work, providing parents with a window into their child's learning journey. Twice yearly, during our formal assessment periods, parents receive comprehensive updates that showcase their child's growth across multiple developmental domains as observed through project participation.

Rather than focusing narrowly on academic achievements, our documentation captures the holistic development that occurs naturally through project work:

Intellectual development: We observe how children's thinking evolves from simple observations to more complex analysis and problem-solving. Documentation shows how children formulate increasingly sophisticated questions, make connections between ideas, and apply knowledge in new contexts.

Social-emotional growth: Projects provide rich opportunities to develop collaboration skills, empathy, perseverance, and self-regulation. We document how children navigate group dynamics, respond to challenges, and grow in confidence as competent learners.

Spiritual formation: Our documentation highlights moments when children make connections to biblical truths, express wonder at God's creation, demonstrate Christ-like character, or apply biblical values in their interactions with others and the environment.

Communication skills: Projects naturally foster language development as children discuss ideas, interview experts, document findings, and present discoveries. We capture children's growing ability to express thoughts, listen to others, and use varied communication tools.

Through careful observation and documentation—including photos, work samples, transcribed conversations, and learning stories—we create a rich narrative of each child's development that goes beyond what traditional assessments can measure. Parents value these bi-annual insights into their child's growth, often expressing surprise and delight at the depth of learning revealed through project work.
