Ocean Week Project: Nurturing Faith and Curiosity Through Inquiry-Based Science at Home

The vast oceans that cover our planet offer endless opportunities for learning, wonder, and spiritual connection. For young children, the ocean represents a magnificent canvas that displays God's creative power and wisdom. At Little Olive Tree Preschool, we believe that nurturing a child's natural curiosity about God's creation helps them develop a deeper understanding of Truth, Beauty, and Goodness in our world.

While our preschool curriculum engages children in meaningful learning experiences, we recognize the powerful role parents play as their child's first and most important teachers. This Ocean Week Project guide offers parents practical ways to extend learning at home through inquiry-based science activities that align with biblical principles. By exploring ocean themes together, you'll create opportunities for your child to see, understand, and appreciate God's magnificent underwater creation while developing important early science skills.

Let's embark on this ocean adventure together, combining faith and discovery in ways that will nurture your child's spiritual and intellectual growth!

Understanding Inquiry-Based Learning from a Biblical Perspective

Inquiry-based learning is an approach that encourages children to explore, question, investigate and understand the world around them. When viewed through a biblical lens, inquiry becomes a powerful way for children to discover God's handiwork in creation.

In Psalm 111:2, we read: "Great are the works of the LORD; they are pondered by all who delight in them." This verse beautifully captures the essence of faith-based inquiry learning—taking delight in studying and pondering God's creation. When children ask questions about the ocean's depth, marine creatures, or water properties, they're essentially marveling at God's creative wisdom.

At Little Olive Tree's curriculum, we view inquiry not merely as scientific exploration but as an opportunity to help children see Truth (understanding God's design), appreciate Beauty (recognizing the wonder of creation), and embrace Goodness (learning how to care for what God has made). This holistic approach can be seamlessly continued at home.

When guiding your child through inquiry-based activities:

  1. Welcome questions and wonder together about God's design

  2. Explore biblical connections to scientific discoveries

  3. Emphasize both facts and faith in discussions

  4. Model a posture of humility and awe when learning new things

Setting Up Your Home Ocean Week Project

Creating a meaningful Ocean Week at home doesn't require elaborate materials or extensive preparation. With thoughtful planning and simple resources, you can create an enriching experience that builds on your child's natural curiosity while reinforcing biblical values.

Materials You'll Need:

  • Children's Bible or Bible storybooks

  • Blue construction paper or fabric (for creating an "ocean space")

  • Recycled containers for water experiments

  • Art supplies (crayons, watercolors, paper, clay)

  • Nature journals or paper for recording observations

  • Ocean-themed books from your local library

  • Optional: sea shells, pictures of ocean creatures

  • Simple household items for experiments (salt, oil, food coloring)

Preparing Your Learning Environment:

Designate a special area of your home as the "Ocean Discovery Zone" where your family will gather for activities throughout the week. This could be as simple as a corner of your living room with blue fabric or paper to represent water, a few ocean-themed books, and a Bible opened to creation passages.

Create a simple schedule that balances structured activities with open-ended exploration time. Remember that young children learn best through play and hands-on experiences rather than formal instruction. Plan for 20-30 minutes of focused activity time each day, followed by opportunities for your child to explore materials independently.

Day 1: Ocean Creation and Wonder

Morning Devotion: God Creates the Seas

Begin your Ocean Week by reading Genesis 1:9-10 together: "And God said, 'Let the water under the sky be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear.' And it was so. God called the dry ground 'land,' and the gathered waters he called 'seas.' And God saw that it was good."

Discuss with your child how God purposefully designed the oceans and everything in them. Ask open-ended questions like, "I wonder why God made the oceans so big?" or "How do you think God felt when He made the beautiful seas?"

Wonder Walk Activity

Even if you don't live near the ocean, you can take a "wonder walk" around your neighborhood to observe water in different forms (puddles, streams, rain). Encourage your child to notice how water moves, what it contains, and how it feels. Record their observations and questions in a simple nature journal.

Help them connect these observations to larger ocean concepts by asking, "How might this puddle be similar to or different from the ocean?" or "I wonder where this water will travel to?"

Afternoon Exploration: Ocean in a Bottle

Create a simple "ocean in a bottle" by filling a clear plastic bottle halfway with water, adding a few drops of blue food coloring, and a tablespoon of vegetable oil. Secure the lid tightly and let your child observe how the materials interact when shaken or tilted.

This hands-on experience opens conversations about God's design of water, how ocean waves move, and the properties of different liquids. Connect this to the creation story by noting how God separated the waters and designed each element with purpose.

Day 2: Marine Life Exploration

Morning Devotion: God's Amazing Sea Creatures

Read Psalm 104:24-25 together: "How many are your works, LORD! In wisdom you made them all; the earth is full of your creatures. There is the sea, vast and spacious, teeming with creatures beyond number—living things both large and small."

Explain how God filled the oceans with an incredible variety of creatures, each with unique designs and purposes. Share that scientists estimate there may be more than a million different species living in our oceans, many still undiscovered!

Marine Life Investigation

Gather pictures of different marine animals (fish, whales, octopus, starfish, etc.) from books or printed from the internet. Invite your child to sort these creatures by different characteristics—those that swim, those that live on the ocean floor, those with scales, etc.

Encourage your child to notice the unique features God gave each creature. For example, "Look at how God designed the octopus with eight arms to help it grab food and move around!" or "Notice the special streamlined body God gave the dolphin for swimming fast!"

Afternoon Exploration: Marine Life Models

Use clay or playdough to create models of favorite ocean creatures. As your child shapes their creations, discuss the special features God designed for each animal. This tactile experience helps children appreciate the intricate details of marine life while developing fine motor skills.

Close the day by praying together, thanking God for the amazing variety of ocean creatures He created and for giving us the ability to learn about them.

Day 3: Ocean Conservation and Stewardship

Morning Devotion: Caring for God's Creation

Read Genesis 2:15 together: "The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it."

Explain that God gave humans the special responsibility to care for His creation. Just as Adam was tasked with tending the garden, we have the important job of protecting and caring for the oceans God made.

Stewardship Discussion

Use pictures or videos to gently introduce age-appropriate concepts of ocean pollution and conservation. Rather than causing anxiety, focus on positive actions your family can take to care for God's waters. Discuss how everyday choices like reducing plastic use, proper garbage disposal, and water conservation help protect ocean environments.

Ask reflective questions like, "How do you think it makes God feel when we take good care of His oceans?" or "What are ways our family can help keep water clean?"

Afternoon Action: Family Clean-Up Project

Engage in a practical stewardship activity by collecting litter in your local park or neighborhood (with proper safety precautions). Explain how trash from streets and parks can wash into storm drains and eventually reach the ocean, affecting God's sea creatures.

Alternatively, create a simple water filter using a plastic bottle, cotton balls, sand, and small rocks to demonstrate how we can help clean water. This tangible experience helps children understand their role as caretakers of God's creation.

Day 4: Ocean Science Experiments

Morning Devotion: God's Wisdom in Creation

Read Proverbs 3:19-20: "By wisdom the LORD laid the earth's foundations, by understanding he set the heavens in place; by his knowledge the watery depths were divided, and the clouds let drop the dew."

Explain that God created everything with perfect wisdom and understanding. When we study science, we're discovering the amazing ways God designed our world to work.

Salt Water Investigation

Prepare two clear glasses—one with fresh water and one with salt water. Help your child make predictions about what might happen when you place an egg in each glass. The egg will float in salt water but sink in fresh water.

Connect this observation to God's design of the oceans, explaining that salt water has special properties that help certain creatures float and survive. Wonder together about God's wisdom in creating oceans with just the right amount of salt.

Afternoon Exploration: Ocean in Motion

Fill a clear container with water and sprinkle pepper on the surface to represent floating items in the ocean. Demonstrate how wind creates waves by gently blowing across the water's surface. Then show how underwater currents work by carefully adding a drop of food coloring to one side of the container.

Connect these observations to God's design of ocean systems that distribute nutrients, regulate temperature, and support marine life. Marvel together at how God created these complex systems to sustain life on our planet.

Day 5: Ocean Art and Reflection

Morning Devotion: Praising the Creator

Read Psalm 148:7-13: "Praise the LORD from the earth, you great sea creatures and all ocean depths... Let them praise the name of the LORD, for his name alone is exalted; his splendor is above the earth and the heavens."

Explain that all of creation—including the oceans and everything in them—praises God simply by being what He created them to be. When we create art inspired by God's creation, we're joining in that praise!

Ocean Praise Art

Provide watercolors, blue construction paper, and other art supplies for creating ocean-themed artwork. Encourage your child to paint or draw something they learned about oceans during the week. As they create, talk about how artists throughout history have been inspired by God's beautiful oceans.

Consider playing gentle ocean sounds in the background to create a reflective atmosphere. Remind your child that creating beauty is one way we reflect God's image as the ultimate Creator.

Afternoon Reflection: Ocean Learning Celebration

Gather all the projects, artwork, and journal entries created throughout the week. Create a simple display of your child's ocean learning journey. Take time to review what you discovered together about God's amazing ocean creation.

Ask reflective questions such as: - "What was your favorite thing we learned about God's oceans?" - "Which ocean creature do you think is most amazing? Why?" - "How can we continue to care for God's waters?"

Close your Ocean Week with a prayer of thanksgiving for all you learned together and for God's magnificent creativity displayed in the oceans.

Extending the Learning Journey

Your Ocean Week may be concluding, but the learning journey can continue in many ways:

Visit Local Water Features

Plan a family outing to a local aquarium, beach, lake, or even a pet store with fish displays. These experiences provide opportunities to observe aquatic life firsthand and continue conversations about God's underwater creation.

Ocean-Themed Family Movie Night

Select age-appropriate nature documentaries about oceans to watch together as a family. Use these visual resources as springboards for further discussion about God's underwater wonders.

Continue the Conversation

Incorporate ocean-themed children's books into your regular reading routine. Many beautiful picture books explore ocean environments and creatures while reinforcing concepts of wonder and appreciation for creation.

Prayer Focus

Include prayers for oceans and marine life in your family prayer times. This practice helps children develop a heart for God's creation and reinforces their identity as caretakers of what He has made.

Through these shared learning experiences, you're helping your child become exactly what the olive tree in Scripture represents—a source of beauty, blessing, and fruitfulness in God's kingdom.

Nurturing Faith and Curiosity: The Heart of Learning

As we conclude our exploration of this Ocean Week Project, we're reminded that the most meaningful learning experiences connect head and heart, facts and faith. By engaging your child in inquiry-based ocean activities through a biblical lens, you've provided far more than science education—you've helped them develop a framework for seeing all of creation as an expression of God's character and care.

The questions your child asked, the observations they made, and the connections you drew together have planted seeds that will continue to grow. Their natural curiosity about God's underwater world has been affirmed and nurtured in ways that honor both scientific discovery and spiritual formation.

Remember that you don't need special teaching credentials or elaborate resources to guide your child's learning journey. Your willingness to wonder alongside them, to point out God's fingerprints in creation, and to model stewardship of His world provides the most powerful learning context of all—one rooted in relationship and reverence.

May your family continue to discover the Truth, Beauty, and Goodness of God's creation together, one question and discovery at a time!
