On 23rd June 2023, the entire teaching staff body of Presbyterian Preschool Services gathered to learn about the “Image of the Child”, a workshop conducted by Alicia Yah, our Curriculum Mentor from the English Curriculum Team. Here are some of the reflections from our staff after the workshop: *Some reflections have been edited for clarity. How has the "Image of the Child" workshop changed your belief/perception of children? “This workshop enlightened me by helping me realise

Back to Basics – Knowing Who We are and What We are Made For
A summary of 23 June 2023’s Staff Learning Day Being Everything, Everywhere All at Once For the Children Preschool teachers are multi-hyphenates. They are expected to take care of a child’s most basic and fundamental needs (like changing, eating and keeping children safe). But they are also a child’s friend and cheerleader. These barely scratch the tip of the iceberg of all the roles a teacher plays other than preparing for lessons and creating learning spaces within the clas

The ‘understory’ of Creation C.A.R.E 2023: understanding the 'why'
Akin to the many layers of the rainforest, there are various facets of Creation C.A.R.E that can be uncovered. Although the children’s artworks were a great hit with the public, Creation C.A.R.E is not merely a fun art project that showed off their creativity and talent for aesthetics. This year, we chose to let the children explore the topic of “Orang Utan and its rainforest friends”. Emergent The emergent layer of the rainforest is where big, tall trees tower over the enti

Celebrating the children's work at our Creation C.A.R.E Art Showcase launch!
Shrieks of exhilaration and surprise were heard all around as children from various preschools, donned in their colourful uniforms, arrived at One Punggol last Thursday. Our little ones had been looking forward to the launch of the Creation C.A.R.E 2023 Art Showcase, where their precious creations and artworks were on display! As they inched closer for a better look at the sculptures, dioramas and adorable animals, they started pointing at them and beckoning their friends and

"Konnichiwa" to friends in Japan, love from our Woodlands Centre!
“こんにちは” (Konnichiwa), which means "hello", was the greeting that our children heard from friends across the globe in Japan. Although they were 5,000km apart, distance was not an issue. Thankfully technology made it possible for PPS children to interact with similarly-aged students during their cross-cultural exchange abroad, albeit over Zoom. The Japanese children from Hoppel Land Ushigome Preschool welcomed PPS Woodlands children with waving Singapore flags! What a heartwarm

A chat with Kanniga, who has 30 years of experience working with children and champions inclusivity
In this series of chats with our staff, we get up close and personal. They share about things like their favourite drinks, to their experiences and motivations at work. Hello! Could you introduce yourself? I am Kanniga, the Assistant Director of the Care and Development department, so I oversee the early intervention programmes in PPS. What does a typical day at work look like? Should I start from the time that I get out of my bed, then have my bath? (laughs) Usually I wil

A chat with Alicia Yah, the "bao ga liao" lady who juggles work, family and fitness
In this series of chats with our staff, we get up close and personal. They share about things like their favourite drinks, to their experiences and motivations at work. Hello, could you introduce yourself? I'm Alicia, and I am a Curriculum Mentor in PPS. What does a typical day at work look like? I’m like “bao ga liao” (meaning “to cover everything” in Hokkien). I do lot of things, and my day changes everyday. Some days, I would be preparing training materials, some days I

Proud to be part of the ‘rojak’ of Singapore this National Day!
Red and white are the colours of our flag, but the diversity of our backgrounds and cultures can be likened to a kaleidoscope. Bursting forth with vibrancy, a dynamic tapestry – yet harmonious. Everyone who lives in Singapore is part of a one-of-a-kind ‘rojak’ (the Malay word for 'mixed'; also the name of a dish with Malay and Chinese influences), whether you were born and bred here or you moved over from another country! This was exactly what our children in the centres cel

Our NDP Music Video '23: Shine Your Light
"Go, Shine Your Light upon the world!" The hook "Go, Shine Your Light upon the world" is something we that we've been hearing a lot of on the radio and in malls. Beyond it being catchy, it emboldens us Singaporeans to share our joy and Singaporean spirit with others beyond borders. The song also reminds us that just like how Singapore, a little red dot has come so far in the past 58 years, that we as individuals can also dream big and achieve much if we believe in ourselves.

$45,000 raised through Good Start Run Fundraising Dinner
Stephen Lim Nghee Huat (or more affectionately known as Uncle Nghee Huat or Uncle Yifa among the children in Presbyterian Preschools) is an ultramarathoner who has been running unfathomable distances to raise funds for various causes since 2005. He ran his first ultramarathon, which covered a distance of 160km (almost 4 times longer than a regular marathon), when he was 51. This year, Uncle Nghee Huat turned 70. Yet, the distance he will be covering for his next ultramarathon

Ultramarathoner Runs 346km for PPS’ Education Support Programme
"What do you think about when you first start preparing for an ultramarathon?" This was a question we posed to Uncle Nghee Huat in July, during the period of the final leg of training in Singapore for his upcoming ultramarathon in Scotland. His response was unique - he said he would always ask God for help – for strength and sustenance so that he will be able to complete the run without encountering serious issues. ..he would always ask God for help – for strength and susten

Fitting in and thriving with new friends
Andy* is a child under the Educational Support Programme (ESP), which provides a natural environment for children with special needs to learn, play, socialise and grow alongside with regular peers. As Andy has Global Developmental Delay, he struggled with development in motor skills and social-emotional skills. His parents were highly concerned about Andy’s social- emotional well-being, as he was unable to integrate into his previous preschool. He was left out of group activi

Reflections from 23 June Learning Day PM Session: Universal Design for Learning
On 23rd June 2023, the entire teaching staff body of Presbyterian Preschool Services gathered to learn about creating classrooms that removed barriers to learning. How has the "Universal Desi

PPS Yishun at the Zoo's Zoobilee Celebration!
'I'm so excited!' exclaimed Charmaine from PPS Yishun Centre as they were walking towards the Animal Playground for Singapore Zoo's Golden Zoobilee celebration today! To everyone's surprise, Zookeepers brought out two special animal friends while waiting for the celebration to begin. Our children got up close and personal with the carpet python snake and the bearded dragon lizard, feeling the texture of their skin with their eager but gentle touches. Some preferred to observe

Big Causes by Little Voices: Fundraising by Pasir Ris 21!
Joy and laughter could be heard from afar from children and parents at our Pasir Ris 21 Centre last Thursday during their Carnival – Big Causes by Little Voices. The heart of the carnival was to raise funds for the community. They kicked off the carnival with performances at the void deck, where children were singing and playing instruments enthusiastically. The music captivated many including the residents living in the neighbourhood. Additionally, games were organised by th

Celebrating World Book Day @ PPS Ghim Moh Centre!
Being literate enables us to make sense of the world around us, communicate effectively and thus form meaningful connections with the people in our lives. And the gateway to a child’s literacy? Through adventures and experiences that come alive through the telling and retelling of their favourite books. This was Ms Bethanie Wong’s intention for Presbyterian Preschool (Ghim Moh) when she rallied her teachers to commemorate World Book Day (23rd April 2023) in advance with their

Easter 2023: God gives us new life!
For Easter this year, we were once again reminded about what God had done for us on the cross, and how God’s love gives us new life.
Our children were brought on a journey of the four days leading up to Resurrection Sunday, or a day commonly known as Easter. During the last supper - Jesus’ final meal with his disciples before his crucifixion - he showed true servant leadership by washing His disciples feet. He hoped that they would have the same humbled heart and attitude
