I am Susila, and what I do here in PPS is many roles rolled into one. I am a manager - I manage a team of education support teachers; I am also a mentor to learning support educators. Lian Choon - a Principal who invests in the life of her team
I believe that as a Principal I must start by listening well and connecting to my team. This pair of headphones reminds me to converse to understand each of my staff so that I can bring out the best in them. Only when we are personally invested in them as people, learning about them and caring for them, will we be able to function as a team. That is when the team will be able to get moving. Lian Choon, Principal Holland Village

Ramona - a Principal who leads with purpose and clarity
Ramona, Principal, Bukit Batok These toy rings belong to my son. It is part of a strategy game and it reminds me to be a thinking and strategising leader so that i can lead my teachers in the direction of actualising our educational mission of building a strong foundation in truth, beauty and goodness for each of our children. As a leader, we need to know where we are going if not our team will only end up running in circles - it may seem like we are doing a lot of work but w

Yinshuang - a Principal who reflects God's love
Yinshuang, Principal, Ang Mo Kio Having spent my whole career in the sector as a classroom teacher, stepping into the role of the Principal in May this year meant there are many areas I needed to grow in. However, this role also affords me opportunities to reflect the many good practices I have learnt from the leaders and team mates I have worked with in the past. Hence, I chose the mirror to represent my leadership journey. The mirror also reminds me that as a Principal, I

Modifying commmunication and learning for a non-verbal student
Daniel* is currently 4 years old and was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. When Daniel first started school at PPS 9 months ago, he was having difficulty adapting to the new environment as he is non-verbal and faces multiple sensorial challenges. This pushed the team at AMK to experiment with modifying the environment in small ways that would invite him to be more comfortable and accepting of the school environment. For example, he was given a chair with a resistance b

Fulfilling a child's longing to go to school just like his twin sister
Mithran's premature birth caused him to be born with a condition called Retinopathy of Prematurity, which means that he has an underdeveloped retina. This resulted in him being visually-impaired, which denied him the opportunity to attend school like every other neurotypical child. Given that he is also a non-Singaporean citizen, he was not able to enrol into the existing inclusive programmes recommended via SG Enable. Unlike Mithran, his twin sister did not suffer any compli

On 23rd June 2023, the entire teaching staff body of Presbyterian Preschool Services gathered to learn about the “Image of the Child”, a workshop conducted by Alicia Yah, our Curriculum Mentor from the English Curriculum Team. Here are some of the reflections from our staff after the workshop: *Some reflections have been edited for clarity. How has the "Image of the Child" workshop changed your belief/perception of children? “This workshop enlightened me by helping me realise

Back to Basics – Knowing Who We are and What We are Made For
A summary of 23 June 2023’s Staff Learning Day Being Everything, Everywhere All at Once For the Children Preschool teachers are multi-hyphenates. They are expected to take care of a child’s most basic and fundamental needs (like changing, eating and keeping children safe). But they are also a child’s friend and cheerleader. These barely scratch the tip of the iceberg of all the roles a teacher plays other than preparing for lessons and creating learning spaces within the clas

The ‘understory’ of Creation C.A.R.E 2023: understanding the 'why'
Akin to the many layers of the rainforest, there are various facets of Creation C.A.R.E that can be uncovered. Although the children’s artworks were a great hit with the public, Creation C.A.R.E is not merely a fun art project that showed off their creativity and talent for aesthetics. This year, we chose to let the children explore the topic of “Orang Utan and its rainforest friends”. Emergent The emergent layer of the rainforest is where big, tall trees tower over the enti

Celebrating the children's work at our Creation C.A.R.E Art Showcase launch!
Shrieks of exhilaration and surprise were heard all around as children from various preschools, donned in their colourful uniforms, arrived at One Punggol last Thursday. Our little ones had been looking forward to the launch of the Creation C.A.R.E 2023 Art Showcase, where their precious creations and artworks were on display! As they inched closer for a better look at the sculptures, dioramas and adorable animals, they started pointing at them and beckoning their friends and

"Konnichiwa" to friends in Japan, love from our Woodlands Centre!
“こんにちは” (Konnichiwa), which means "hello", was the greeting that our children heard from friends across the globe in Japan. Although they were 5,000km apart, distance was not an issue. Thankfully technology made it possible for PPS children to interact with similarly-aged students during their cross-cultural exchange abroad, albeit over Zoom. The Japanese children from Hoppel Land Ushigome Preschool welcomed PPS Woodlands children with waving Singapore flags! What a heartwarm

A chat with Alicia Yah, the "bao ga liao" lady who juggles work, family and fitness

Proud to be part of the ‘rojak’ of Singapore this National Day!
Red and white are the colours of our flag, but the diversity of our backgrounds and cultures can be likened to a kaleidoscope. Bursting forth with vibrancy, a dynamic tapestry – yet harmonious. Everyone who lives in Singapore is part of a one-of-a-kind ‘rojak’ (the Malay word for 'mixed'; also the name of a dish with Malay and Chinese influences), whether you were born and bred here or you moved over from another country! This was exactly what our children in the centres cel

Our NDP Music Video '23: Shine Your Light
"Go, Shine Your Light upon the world!" The hook "Go, Shine Your Light upon the world" is something we that we've been hearing a lot of on the radio and in malls. Beyond it being catchy, it emboldens us Singaporeans to share our joy and Singaporean spirit with others beyond borders. The song also reminds us that just like how Singapore, a little red dot has come so far in the past 58 years, that we as individuals can also dream big and achieve much if we believe in ourselves.

$45,000 raised through Good Start Run Fundraising Dinner
Stephen Lim Nghee Huat (or more affectionately known as Uncle Nghee Huat or Uncle Yifa among the children in Presbyterian Preschools) is an ultramarathoner who has been running unfathomable distances to raise funds for various causes since 2005. He ran his first ultramarathon, which covered a distance of 160km (almost 4 times longer than a regular marathon), when he was 51. This year, Uncle Nghee Huat turned 70. Yet, the distance he will be covering for his next ultramarathon

Ultramarathoner Runs 346km for PPS’ Education Support Programme
"What do you think about when you first start preparing for an ultramarathon?" This was a question we posed to Uncle Nghee Huat in July, during the period of the final leg of training in Singapore for his upcoming ultramarathon in Scotland. His response was unique - he said he would always ask God for help – for strength and sustenance so that he will be able to complete the run without encountering serious issues. ..he would always ask God for help – for strength and susten
