Bridging Generations: A Meaningful 元宵节 Celebration at Little Olive Tree Tampines

In celebration of 元宵节, Little Olive Tree Tampines organized a meaningful intergenerational outreach programme in collaboration with Lion Befrienders. The session was designed to honour tradition, encourage interaction, and foster genuine bonding between children and seniors through shared cultural experiences. The afternoon began with a lively Chinese New Year performance by our K2 children, filling the room with festive cheer and bright smiles. Their confident voices and joyful expressions set the tone for what would become a deeply heartwarming time together.

This was followed by a dumpling-making session where children and seniors worked hand-in-hand to prepare dumplings. There was laughter over uneven folds, gentle guidance from experienced hands, and patient little fingers learning new skills. Ah Min, our part-time cleaner and also a senior befriended by Lion Befrienders, volunteered to help prepare the dumpling skins, adding a beautiful layer of warmth and community spirit to the activity.

After the hands-on session, everyone gathered around the table to enjoy the freshly made dumplings over afternoon teatime, sharing stories, smiles, and heartfelt conversations.

Throughout the session, we witnessed what we often speak about at Little Olive Tree — Truth, Beauty, and Goodness lived out in simple yet profound ways.

Truth, as children learn that traditions carry meaning and that every generation has something valuable to share. Beauty, in the sight of young and old connecting naturally, unfiltered and sincere. Goodness, expressed through kindness, patience, service, and the joy of giving to one another.

The celebration concluded on a particularly touching note when Uncle Thomas presented a handmade craft to the children. A small but meaningful gift that symbolized the bonds formed that afternoon. It was a reminder that when generations come together, everyone leaves richer.
